St. Charles River
Date: 7/11/2008Fish Caught: 5 browns and a bow
Location: St. Charles River
Weather Condition: Cloudy and temps in the 80s
The St. Charles River is a nice stream that flows from San Isabel Lake. I fished it briefly last week but got rained out before I could get some pictures and was short lived. To get to the river go to the parking on the south end of the lake off the 165 and hike down the trail by the spillway.
Once down there I saw a large brown cruising in the pool at the bottom of the spillway. I had him take a small humphy but once he felt the hook he would not take anything else. I worked my way down the stream and every pocket and hole held multiple fish. The small browns were beautiful with bright red spots. I also caught a small rainbow that was previously hooked and still had the line coming out its mouth and could feel the hook in its stomach. I wish others would keep fish that they know don’t have a chance. The line was obviously cut.
The hike out is always a chore as it is a pretty good incline and at about 9,000 feet it takes your breath away. It was a very successful trip and the fish are beautiful and the stream is a nice little hidden stream I plan to work a lot more and find other holes further down.
